Opt In Learning Official Strands

We are excited about the kick-off of the official Opt-In Learning Strands for 2016-17!   Search for the "Opt In Learning Official Strands" page to learn more about getting involved.

What are Opt-In Experiences & Where did These Focal Areas Come From?

To support the Math in Common community’s continued CCSS-M implementation efforts between meetings, we are excited to kick-off our formalized Opt-In strands, with ongoing experiences, for the 2015-2016 school year. These strands of work were developed based on the greatest common areas of practice that districts have prioritized in their four desired outcomes (V, P, C, I). These experiences allow small groups of district leaders to focus on a small-grain sized, real-time problem of practice faced by a “host team” as it works towards one of its desired outcomes for the year. Visiting district teams act as consultants and co-learners to reflect on progress, unpack obstacles, and identify possible new solutions.

Strategies to Promote Student Discourse

Each upcoming experience in this "strand" will focus on the following:

PROCESS: These sessions will support teams in achieving a district-wide use of tools and rubrics that help support teachers in understanding progress on these instructional shifts.

Essential Questions: What are the best ways to develop, implement, and use student observation form, with calibrated observers, to identify growth in student to student discourse? Additionally, how do we make sense of the data and act on our findings?

Classroom Observation Tools for Leaders

Each upcoming experience in this "strand" will focus on the following:

PROCESS: These sessions will focus in on building school leaders' capacity to provide teachers with precise and accurate feedback about district priorities in CCSS-M implementation.

Essential Questions: Considering the vast amount of content expertise principals need to have, what specific CCSS-M related knowledge, skills, and mindsets are critical for them to develop as they themselves develop their teachers' craft?

Lesson Study

Each upcoming experience in this "strand" will focus on the following:

CONTENT: These sessions focus on working toward a district-wide agreement on the expectations of the common instructional shifts teachers are being trained to make and currently see them “alive” in 100% of classrooms.

Essential Questions: Is this professional learning process advancing our focal areas: promoting high quality student to student discourse, embedded formative assessment and advancing team collaboration? Which parts of the Lesson Study structure are most critical in supporting teachers and leaders progress toward advancing common instructional shifts and how can we replicate smaller ongoing experiences that include those pieces?

High Leverage Team Actions

Each upcoming experience in this "strand" will focus on the following:

PROCESS: This focal area is being utilized by districts with their Principals to work toward a high level of coherence in the language and expectations around the specifics of math instruction in ALL classrooms across the district

Essential Questions: How are all of our principals being supported throughout the year to advance these HLTA’s at their sites? What types of structures and processes are moving these forward?

Embedded Formative Assessment

Each upcoming experience in this "strand" will focus on the following:

CONTENT Rubric: These sessions will focus on building teacher capacity to implement formative assessment practices in classrooms, with a focus on SMPs and the content standards.

Essential Questions: What does it really mean for our teachers to use daily formative assessment practices to understand progress towards the Standards for Mathematical Practices? Will it take to support all our teachers to actually use this practice daily?
